In this tutorial we will show you how easy it is to use both ONE and GiO at the same time in either Logic or GarageBand.

First Open Audio MIDI Setup

Click on the plus button in the lower left corner to add a new aggregate device

Select ONE

Select GiO

Now when you expand the Aggregate Device, you will see ONE and GiO

By clicking on ONE or GiO you can individually adjust Input and Output volume

You can also make it so that it is the device used for Computer sound output, for listening to iTunes etc..

In GarageBand choose Preferences> Audio/MIDI

Change Audio Output to “Aggregate Device”

Change Audio Input to “Aggregate Device”

Now select the input for each track so for the vocal track choose Mono 1. Since ONE was selected first when you built the Aggregate device it is input 1

So now for Guitar you will choose Mono 2 for GiO

In Logic choose Preferences>Audio

Change the Output & Input device to “Aggregate Device”

In Logic you can make custom labels for your inputs and outputs

Click on Options>Audio>I/O Labels

Select “Users”

Name Input #1

Do the same for Input #2

You can now select either ONE or GiO on any of the tracks in Logic

Now you can record vocals with ONE, guitars with GiO, and remotely control all the functions in Logic or GarageBand with your foot…All at the same time.

Remove both blank panels

Make sure to save these screws, you will need them to secure the new I/O module later.

Remove the 9 screws shown here

Remove the cable connected to the headphone board, by gripping the sides and pulling up.

Place the I/O module and align it so that you can re-install the 9 screws you just removed.

Don’t tighten them all the way at this time.

Install the two screws on the back panel that you removed earlier.

Now tighten the 9 screws

Replace the headphone board connection cable.

If you’re installing a second module right away, you will use the stand offs instead of the screws.

Also, if you are only installing a single module, you will want to replace the blank panel in the second slot.

Connect the provided ribbon cable to the Primary I/O port on the Main board… and the other end of the ribbon cable to the new I/O Module as shown here

Reconnect the center support bar.

Singer/Songwriter Rachel Geller records her song “Blue” entirely with ONE and her laptop at Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studios. Being affordable, high-quality and easy-to-use, Apogee’s ONE has proved to be the missing link for Rachel between receiving and sending finished tracks to her producers in the most efficient way.

Trained in both classical voice and guitar, Rachel’s inspiration derives from early twentieth-century jazz, blues, hip-hop, and Russian folk music. She has performed extensively in the midwest and west coast both as a solo artist and with a band. She has shared the stage with notable musicians such as: Matisyahu, Dead Prez, PM Dawn, and Living Legends, among many others. According to the Minneapolis Arts & Entertainment magazine, Vitamin: “Rachel entices eyes with her charm and captivates ears as her voice elegantly bounces through the room.”

With her 1782 Gragnani confidently in hand as if an extension of herself, LA-based musician Christine Wu played Johann Sebastian Bach’s classic violin solo with impressive ease and infectious enjoyment to a handful of lucky Apogee ears. With notes and emotion authentically captured with the built-in microphone, the recording attests to ONE’s high-fidelity capabilities even with a 230 year-old vintage classical violin. Each nuance and phrase of Bach’s Sonata No. 1, Mvt. IV –performed in G Minor – was recorded at 44.1K 24 bit via ONE’s internal condenser microphone, mic pre and A to D converter, straight into Apple’s GarageBand on a MacBook Pro. A true testament to its vast capabilities and captured with enough clarity to give you goose bumps.

“As a musician who has to do so much work on the fly, I’ve been so curious about ONE since hearing about its development,” Christine says. “The fact that I split my time between London and LA makes the challenges of high-fidelity mobile recording at the drop of a hat REALLY obvious.” After reaching tenure at the Houston Symphony, Christine brought her talent for weaving notes together to the recording industry. Now based in LA as a string arranger/composer and producer on records for artists such as Usher and Leona Lewis, Christine also records violin, viola and cello with L.A. Strings, a professional studio string section.

Hear the raw audio file of Christine’s performance on the Apogee Hear ONE page.

Playing multiple guitar parts with complementary sound effects and amp selections, he uses MainStage’s Loopback feature to layer each part while changing patches and controlling transport functions with GiO. Without ever touching the keyboard or mouse, Blake seamlessly interweaves melancholic presets on stage to create a dreamy soundscape of rhythm and melody, using just his guitar, MainStage, GiO and a MacBook Pro.

From programmer and live tech for Nine Inch Nails to producer, mixer and guitarist in Maynard Keenan’s Puscifer, Mat Mitchell knows how to work both sides of the show. A Logic man in the studio and a MainStage enthusiast in front of a crowd, Mat swears by his Symphony Mobile System with Rosetta 800 for both his own and outside projects. Newly converted to the ease-of-use and adaptability of Apogee’s GiO, Mat shares how he uses it, what it does, and why he thinks it’s the perfect addition for any recording musician.

Visit Puscifer at http://www.myspace.com/censorshipisacancer

Video Transcript

Hi I’m Mat Mitchell, currently performing and producing the project Puscifer. In the past I’ve worked with The Perfect Circle, teching for Billy Howerdel. That’s where I met Maynard Keenan. [I've] since worked with Tool, and most recently with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. Working a bit in the studio and extensively live doing programming and live tech work.

On tour and in the studio, I’ve been using Apogee products for quite some time. On the Nine Inch Nails tour, we used Symphony Mobile and Rosetta for all the guitar and keyboard sounds through MainStage. For the latest Puscifer recordings, we’ve been using Duet quite a bit. We use Soundelux U95 plugged straight into a Duet, and then using the dynamics in Logic.

Recently I was introduced to a new Apogee product, GiO. It allows me to scroll through my amps; it allows me to control stomp box effects; it allows me to control my transport functions hands free. Another thing we discovered is that you can assign buttons to create a new track and arm that track. Since we are already using MainStage Live, the GiO is a great addition. It allows me to switch through my amps and all my pedals through MainStage. Both live and in the studio, the GiO is really a good addition.

The Billboard-dubbed “soulful” and “calming” Oak & Gorski (formerly known as The Ken Oak Band) have sold more than 25,000 albums independently through their own label, Cello Rock Records, self-booked five national tours, and have been featured on “CSI: New York” and Dreamworks’ She’s the Man. Cellist Ken Oak and acoustic guitarist Ed Gorski have graced the well-treaded sidewalks of Santa Monica’s Third St. Promenade and have been a long-standing resident guest of Hotel Café in Hollywood, gaining fans with their unique folk-rock sound.

Their above-featured song, “Pretty Far Gone,” was recorded entirely with Apogee’s ONE- including cello, guitar and vocals- captured solely by its internal condenser microphone, premium converters and mic preamp. With soothing cello, solid and rhythmic acoustic guitar and harmonizing vocals, a song about drinking Jagermeister has never been so intoxicating.

Watch the guitar legend play and record an astounding rendition of his native Australia’s Waltzing Matilda, all with just Apogee’s ONE.

With an astounding rendition of his native Australia’s “Waltzing Matilda,” legendary guitarist Tommy Emmanuel records a live performance with just Apogee’s ONE, his laptop, and a room speckled with a few jaw-dropped admirers.

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. Recently given the Guitar Legend Award by Guitar Player Magazine, Tommy has a professional career that spans almost five decades as an iconic performing artist. A household name in Australia, he has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide with millions signing on to YouTube to study his unparalleled fingerpicking technique. With 300 shows a year over the past four years, Tommy is on the road more days than not. Paired with the free version of GarageBand on his MacBook Pro, his Apogee ONE proves to be the ideal traveling companion to make recording on the road feasible and hassle free. Currently on a jam-packed international tour, Tommy kindly spared a minute to delight and entertain the folks at Apogee with a live performance and recording of Australia’s unofficial national anthem, “Waltzing Matilda.” Recorded with ONE’s internal condenser microphone at Berkeley Street Studio, his performance will be sure to inspire and amaze.

About Tommy Emmanuel, the ‘Guitar Wizard of Oz’

Tommy’s unique style – one he calls simply “finger style” – is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that- and more -on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Tommy to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of his biggest fans.

His popularity in the US has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years, aided by a non-stop touring schedule and increasing exposure in the media. 2005 kicked off a stream of US honors and awards. Tommy was inducted into the National Thumbpickers’ Hall of Fame in Muhlenberg, KY (the only non-American ever to be selected) and was also awarded with Thumbpicker of the Year and Album of the Year. He played Carnegie Hall for Les Paul’s 90th birthday Tribute Concert and his The Mystery album earned a Grammy nomination in 2006 for Best Country Instrumental for “Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag.” In 2008, Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine named him Best Acoustic Guitarist and Gold Medalist – Fingerstyle category- in the Readers’ Choice and Players’ Choice Awards, respectively. Most recently, in 2009, Tommy was honored by Guitar Player Magazine for the second time as “Thumbpicker of the Year” and was given, as mentioned earlier, the magazine’s Guitar Legend Award.

Tommy’s newest album and DVD Center Stage were produced in 2008 based on the popularity of his episode of a PBS series called “Sierra Center Stage” filmed live at the famous Sierra Nevada Brewery venue in Sierra Nevada, CA. Tommy’s Center Stage video has been featured on PBS stations around the country during 2009, drawing ever-larger sellout crowds to his live shows.

In all, Emmanuel’s catalogue includes 16 musical recordings running the gamut of solos, duets, ensembles, cover tunes, and originals, both electric and acoustic guitar. He has made several instructional DVDs and regularly teaches master classes on the road. At 54, performing live is more important to him than ever and he tours constantly. Guitar players of all levels come to his shows to watch the magic hands of the “Guitar Wizard of Oz,” but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. His live shows are known for their humor, passion, and infectious joy. The power of his charismatic showmanship will be foremost in his legacy.
